Fat men face many problems because of their weight. Here is a look at some of them, and what fat men can do to make them better.
Knowing if you are overweight
Understanding what separates fat men from the rest of society is a numbers game. One way to figure out if you fit in the category of fat men is to look at your BMI or Body Mass Index. A BMI of 25 or more is considered overweight, and if it is 30 or higher, it is obese. Keep in mind that this will only work for fat men; those who are overly muscled may have a higher BMI, yet not be overweight.
Another thing that fat men can consider is their waistline. A waist measurement of 40 or more inches can be a sign of dangerous central obesity. Another warning sign is if your waist-to-hip ratio is over 1.0.
Health risks to fat men
Fat men experience numerous more health risks than men of a healthy weight. These include:
Risks of premature death Fat men, especially those that are morbidly obese (a BMI of over 40) have an increased risk of premature death, particularly in the age range of 30 to 64 years of age.
Heart disease Fat men have an increased risk of heart attack, heart failure, and chest pain. Obese individuals are twice as likely to have high blood pressure. It is also more likely that fat men will have high cholesterol levels as well.
Risk of stroke Along with heart disease, fat men also have an increased risk of stroke due to the hardening and narrowing of the arteries.
Type 2 diabetes The more weight you gain, the higher your risk is of developing type 2 diabetes. Over 80% of the people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.
Cancer Fat men have an increased risk of certain types of cancer, including colon, gall bladder, prostate, and kidney cancers.
Fatty liver disease Fat men also have a higher risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as a result of insulin resistance. The higher the BMI, the worse the case of liver disease.
Gallbladder disease Fat men have three times the risk of developing gallstones than men of a healthy weight.
Breathing problems Fat men are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea, asthma, severe bronchitis, and other breathing problems.
Increased risk of arthritis Due to the increase in weight, fat men are more prone to osteoarthritis, particularly in the knees.
Emotional and social stigma Many fat men also have issues with self esteem. Society in general tends to look down on fat men. It can be harder to find clothing, harder to find a mate, and they can even face prejudice on airlines, at restaurants, and more.
What you can do
If you are a fat man, you can take action to turn your life and health around. Diet and exercise are a good place to start, as is a trip to your doctor. In some cases, diet pills can be a useful tool to helping you take the weight off. In extreme cases, weight reduction surgeries may be able to help. Remember, every step you take towards regaining a healthy weight is taking a step for your health.
